Center Point / Big Bluff Goat Trail

For our first trip to Northwest Arkansas, we only had the opportunity to hike one trail. We are so happy we picked the ” Goat Trail “. It was stunning.

Where? Just north of Ponca, AR. The parking lot for the trailhead was easy to find on google maps. Just search the Centerpoint Trail. We arrived around 8 am on a Friday and there were just a few cars, but by the time we came back the lot was full and people were parking across the road. My advice is to arrive as early as you can.

Much of the trail is a walk through the forest. Fall is the most beautiful season.

This trail is no joke. Most of it is through the forest, but when you take the spur out to the bluff, things turn sketchier the farther you go. ( The Bluff trail spur is to the right about 2.5 miles from the trailhead.) The trail gets more and more exposed and eventually it’s just a rock face on your left and a 350+ ft drop on your right. The nice thing is it is easy to turn around whenever you get to the point where you are no longer comfortable. This trail is not suitable for small children due to the dangerous drop-offs. If you are afraid of heights, don’t let it stop you from tagging along with friends. You will be fine for almost the whole thing and should be able to find your happy spot to hang back and wait for the ones in the group that want to go see the more exposed areas. Bring yourself plenty of water and a snack if you can. The trail is all downhill on the way out ( 3 miles ), which means all uphill on the way back ( 3 miles ). You’ll need some energy.

Walk along the bluff progressively gets more exposed to drop-offs.

I’m pretty scared of heights when there are no rails, cages, or handles involved, but I was able to go far enough to see the awesome views. We stopped in an outcropping area that made the perfect spot for a snack with a view. We had it to ourselves for just a few minutes before others began arriving. So glad we came as early as we did, but wish we had been slightly earlier.

Final thoughts : Go. Do it. Wear Good shoes. Bring water and snacks. Go in the fall. Pace yourself on the 3 mile uphill hike back, and you’ll be fine.
