Deerlick Creek Campground – Tuscaloosa, AL

We decided to try something different and squeeze in a 1 night trip to a new camp spot. Wednesday is a free night for us, so why not have some adventure and start checking out spots to see if we’d want to come back for a multiple nights in the future? Lee dubbed it ” Wandering Wednesdays” HA! I like it!
So our first spot was Deerlick Creek Campground. It was great! We definitely will be back. The sites are private and tucked into mature trees. Many sites have decks that overlook the river below. Not getting one of the sites overlooking the water is NOT a big deal, though. One of my favorites was actually one that did not. ( 20 ) It would be a stretch to call them ” water sites ” These sites are up on a high bluff with the water way down below. Access is by designated trails that lead to a handful of docks.

Foggy morning View from our site (18) with forested, steep drop to water down below
Pretty view from the dock on Tall Pines loop.

Our thoughts about sites:
All of the pull throughs are great. Can’t go wrong with one of those. Some of the back- ins are pretty short, so would not be good for a trailer with much length. Be sure to check the site descriptions.
The sites with best views are 34 and 35. They have a great sunset view over the river. ( 35 pictured at the top )

Site 34 ( 2nd Best View ) A bit more private than 35 with the stepped down outdoor space.

Sites 36-40 should only be used if you have a VERY small trailer or tent. There is almost zero space to turn around at the end of the loop. It could mean having to back your trailer all the way back up the hill to get back out. Not worth it when there are so many other great sites to be had in the other loops.
They also have a small loop for tents only that is really nice. They come with electric and water, and are spaced so you are not on top of each other. We will likely try one of those next time.
The bath house was nice and clean. IF you wouldn’t want to walk up a hill to it, don’t stay on the River Bluff Loop.

In addition to the trails that lead down to the water, there is also a paved trail that is great for bikes. They made it interesting by putting up markers that identify the names of various trees along the way. We enjoyed a quiet morning stroll learning the trees.

Tree’s are identified by hand-painted signs along the bike path.

If you don’t have a water-view site, but would like to spend some time by the water, take a picnic at the picnic area. This can be found by going back up to the main gatehouse and making a right. This spur takes you to the picnic area and there is also a swim beach at the very end.

The picnic area we recommend is BEFORE you reach the beach area parking lot. IT didn’t look like much other than just picnic tables in the woods, but then we noticed a wide gravel path going down the hill, so we decided to see if it reached the water. We were surprised when we walked up on the BEST picnic spots down there over looking the water. There are also Vault restrooms down there. Bring hand sanitizer. It’s a pretty decent downhill walk to get to the bottom, but it is worth it. Judging by the looks of it, Not many people go down there, so there’s a good chance you’ll have it to yourself. We were wishing we had brought our little portable tree hammock down.

I’m so glad we found this place! We will be back for sure. I can’t wait to see where our next ” Wandering Wednesday ” will take us!
